The Sky’s the Limit for AISD Artists!

Julia, Ms. Kuntz and I gear up for our ride in the sky.
Today, I went up in the sky with one of the district’s most talented student artists, Bowie sophomore Julia Lund. Her painting was selected to be displayed on a  billboard to advertise the AISD Youth Art Month Art Show. The painting, which is so interesting and imaginative, is on display at the art show, which runs March 23-April 16 at One Congress Plaza. The work of hundreds of students is there to enjoy throughout the month.

On this spectacular spring morning, Julia and her art teacher Martha Anne Kuntz, joined me at the billboard site at 1150 South Lamar to sign her work. How do you sign a billboard? Easy, just call the fire department! Our local fire department staff came to the rescue with a cherry picker that got us up to the sign and back down safely. Whew! That’s quite a ride!

Congratulations to Julia for creating such a fine piece of art. Her painting echoes the work of artists throughout history, including Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. It’s very detailed and painstakingly crafted, but also stunning as a large piece viewed from a distance. Don’t miss the chance to see the large billboard, as well as the original painting on display at the Youth Month Art Show.
Julia signs her monumental artwork, with a little help from AFD.

After the billboard signing, I visited the Art Show with Mark Curry of Wells Fargo. It is a truly impressive display of work from our most talented student artists. Congratulations to second place winner Bowie sophomore Sarah Boles, and third place winner, McCallum sophomore Maxine Leinweber, for having their art selected from an impressive array of creative work.

Wells Fargo's Mark Curry and I are surrounded by a stunning array of award winning student art.
Thanks to the sponsors who have supported Youth Art Month this year and in the past. They include Reagan Outdoor Advertising and A+ Federal Credit Union  as well as the One Congress Plaza building. What a great way for the Austin community to enjoy the talent of our AISD student artists!

This imaginative painting from Bowie sophomore Sarah Boles took second place.
