Reilly Elementary
It's time for lunch, Reilly Mustangs! Eating right is an important part of learning, so I spoke to the Reilly Elementary students in the cafeteria about healthy lunch choices, which are reflected in the district’s new nutrition standards.
On the menu today was:
Tamales (7 pts+)
Cheese, shredded low fat
Whole Grain Cornbread (2 pts+)
Cheese Sandwich (8 pts+)
Pinto Beans (3 pts+)
Squash (1 pts+)
Carrots & Celery Sticks (0 pts+)
Fresh Fruit Variety (0 pts+)
Milk, Chocolate Skim (3 pts+)
Milk, 1% (3 pts+)
Milk, Skim (2 pts+)
Ranch Dressing (1 pts+)
As you can see, each menu item offered in the school cafeterias has been given a Weight Watcher's point value to help our students and other cafeteria diners make smart choices. The calculator uses calories, grams of fat and grams of fiber for the calculation.
In AISD, different menus are developed for each school level. The menus are analyzed to ensure that students receive Recommended Dietary Allowances for calories, protein, iron, calcium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. This year, students will be required to take a fruit or a vegetable as part of their meal. We want students to eat right and eat healthy!
After lunch, Principal Dinorah Bores and Asst. Prinicipal Brian Hill escorted me to a third grade bilingual class, where I watched Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. De La Torre introducing students to the SEL curriculum. Students participated in an exercise to illustrate active, respectful listening. One partner told the other about his or her favorite animal, and other shared three things that were said. There were lots of interesting favorite animals in this group. These students really used their listening skills!
