Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project

Three times during the weekend of March 23-25, Ballet Austin performed Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project at the Long Center. Describing his work, Choreographer Stephen Mills said “'Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project' is a story of survival. Situated during the catastrophic events of the Holocaust, this work strives to illustrate the courage, resilience, and sometimes pure luck required to endure and rebuild life after unimaginable and devastating loss. I am grateful to Naomi Warren and the many survivors who shared their testimony during the creation of this work. I am forever changed by this knowledge and hope that my sharing Naomi’s story, others will be affected to fight indifference and intolerance when witnessed. Past is present and not to be forgotten.”

This project is part of a larger effort in our city to address intolerance. Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Police Chief Art Acevedo served with me as Austin Chairs of the project.  The Anti-Defamation League hosted a dinner to address this topic this week. As Superintendent, I am committed to joining and supporting efforts to strengthen relationships between the diverse communities that make Austin such a vibrant, interesting place to live and work.
