I'm at the 53rd Annual Zilker Summer Musical for their production of
FOOTLOOSE! I have a small role tonight and am a wreck - a very sweaty wreck
in this 105 degree heat! But, the staff of the Zilker Theater Production
(ZTP) is so nice and talented. This is truly a labor of love. Some of our
AISD students are in the production. The Hillside is covered with dedicated
Austinites who have been attending since they were little kids. The show is
perfect for the summer with songs and dancing. There is a deeper message
too. Director Michael McKelvey wrote in his note in the program, "Footloose
is a show about community...the only way a family (or community) can
survive is through communication, understanding and love." Given the
budgetary challenges we have experienced this school year these words speak
to me the most!
It's an amazing experience that is free to the public but not free to do. I
agreed to do the walk-on (I told you it was a small role) not only because
it's great fun, but I am a big supporter of the arts in Austin -- both in
the district and in the community serving on the Austin Symphony and Austin
Ballet boards. They go hand in hand. Let's make sure ZTP receives the kind
of support it deserves for another 50 years as a great community asset!
Let's all support the arts in Austin and in AISD!
